Vice President Kamala Harris, the front-runner for the democratic presidential nomination and recently endorsed by former President Barack Obama, has yet to pick a running mate.

And the clock is ticking. Here's why Harris needs to make the VP pick soon, and the pool of candidates Harris will likely pick from.

When will Kamala Harris pick her vice president?

Harris announced her campaign shortly after President Joe Biden said he was dropping out of the presidential election earlier this month.

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks at The American Federation of Teachers National Convention Thursday, July 25, 2024, in Houston. Harris is visiting Houston as she charges on with her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination after President Joe Biden announced he won't seek reelection.

The will be held in Chicago in mid-August, and that is when party delegates will officially endorse their presidential nominee.

Harris would generally need to select her vice president before the convention.

If Harris named a running mate today, it would still be one of the latest VP candidate announcements in modern history. President Gerald Ford announced Bob Dole as his running mate in the 1976 election on the first day of the Republican National Convention in mid-August.

Is Josh Shapiro vice president pick?

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is an odds-on favorite to become Harris' pick for vice president.

Shapiro hasn't yet in becoming Harris' running mate, but has instead hit the campaign trail .

With Pennsylvania a known battleground state, the generally well-liked Shapiro could give Harris a needed lift there.

Harris could also choose between Pete Buttigieg and Tim Walz

There are others besides Shapiro that Harris could tap for VP.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have been mentioned as strong picks Harris could consider.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, also a consideration, announced she is not seeking the VP nomination and is instead campaigning in support of Harris' presidential campaign.
